Our liberty cannot be guarded but by the freedom of the press, nor that be limited without danger of losing it

"Our liberty cannot be guarded but by the freedom of the press, nor that be limited without danger of losing it." – Thomas Jefferson

Firstly, I want to thank my readers for following along with me. I'm a political news junkie these days, and I am truly compelled to follow this story and record it. I depend on our journalist warriors to give me the truth, which I simply pass along to you. I'm not at all unbiased in my mission, but I do try to be truthful. Journalism, even my version, is essential for preserving our liberty. Thanks for sharing my journey!

We're barreling toward impeachment! Tomorrow, Monday November 11, is Day 49 of the Congressional impeachment inquiry, started just a few days after the public learned about the whistleblower complaint filed about 45's behavior. The House is hoping to vote on articles of impeachment by Christmas.

By way of contrast, it took a year and four months after the Watergate break-in for Congress to begin an impeachment inquiry on Richard Nixon, and another ten months before Nixon resigned. Bill Clinton's impeachment process took more than a year from the time Ken Starr began his investigation until the Senate voted to acquit.

The 116th Congress's desire to finish this quickly is shaping some of the investigation. There are material witnesses that Congress would like to question, but many are defying subpoenas, preferring to defer to 45's prohibition of testimony.

There was a bit of testimony since I last wrote. Jennifer Williams, an aide to Vice President Pence had listened in on the phone call and was expected to testify about the phone call itself and also Pence's involvement and knowledge. But last week, committees had more no-shows than witnesses.

Former national security advisor John Bolton did not show up to testify, and the committees have decided not to force compliance from him or any of the other witnesses who are defying subpoenas. Congress wants to move ahead quickly and does not want to take the time to have a court decide on whether witnesses can be compelled to testify. But tantalizingly, Bolton's attorney issued a letter to Congress saying Bolton "was personally involved in many of the events, meetings, and conversations about which you have already received testimony, as well as many relevant meetings and conversations that have not yet been discussed in the testimonies thus far." Yet he wants to be subpoenaed. And he has stated he will not comply with a subpoena, preferring to have a court decide. Dude, come on. Just go and tell them what you know. This is our country at stake. Geez.

Acting Chief of Staff and Director of the Office of Management and Budget (the office, by the way, that disperses funds such as the Ukraine aid) Mick Mulvaney was also a no-show. He was at the center of the scheme and he knows a lot, but he ain't talkin'. Don't forget, though. We do have public admittance from him that "there was a quid pro quo and get over it!" Mulvaney also wants to have the court decide on his obligation to testify.

More transcripts were released, and I'm thankful that Chairman Schiff is releasing them in drips, because as it is, it's hard to keep up with all of the information that is emerging from them. Thank you, Founding Fathers, for the First Amendment guaranteeing a free press, so that we may have many ears and eyes on the government.

On Wednesday we got Bill Taylor's testimony transcript and that of George Kent, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, one of the officials who was supposed to be overseeing Ukraine but was pushed aside by the "second channel." Both of these gentlemen will testify in public on the first day of televised hearings.

Mr. Taylor will be the first to testify in public on Wednesday, November 13. We learned a lot from his bombshell opening statement, which was released in advance of his private testimony to the committees. In his testimony, he outlined the shadow diplomacy led by 45's personal attorney Rudy Giuliani and described his "clear understanding, security assistance money would not come until the president (of Ukraine) committed to pursue the investigation (into the Bidens)." He described Rudy Giuliani's role and the fact that John Bolton tried to derail the second channel's efforts to establish a quid pro quo. He also describes a possible nightmare scenario where Ukraine commits to the quid pro quo but has the aid denied anyway, to the great benefit of Russia. See? This, pupils, is why we depend on seasoned, knowledgable diplomats to steer foreign relationships, and not insane presidents, whack-job lawyers, and mega-donors. See a summary of Taylor's testimony here.

Mr. Taylor is a compelling witness. A career public servant, he has served in the foreign service under every administration since 1985. He has a lifelong habit of making detailed extemporaneous notes for every meeting and phone call. He is well-respected in the foreign service world. I look forward to welcoming this patriot into my living room on Wednesday.

Mr. Kent is also poised to be a star witness. He is another long-time foreign service official, serving in the State Department since 1992. We can trust George Kent. You can always trust a man who wears a bow tie.

On Friday we received the transcripts of the private testimony of Army Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, who served on the National Security Council as a Ukraine expert, as well as Fiona Hill, 45's former advisor on Russia and Europe. Ms. Hill will testify in public on Friday, November 15. (SCROTUS, save your "Never Trumper" diatribe. These people were in YOUR administration). You can read about the highlights of their testimony in the New York Times.

Hill described harassment towards her and Ambassador Yavonovich from within the department and the fact that she has received death threats. It's really distressing that this sort of behavior was conducted against devoted public servants. I guess he really did drain the swamp. Now we're left with a festering, rancid, putrid pile of poo-ooze that flows throughout the Executive Branch offices.

It was reported that Zelensky was indeed going to do TЯUMP's bidding. He was poised to do an interview on CNN, but word got out about the held-up funds in the American press at the last minute. Remember: Ukraine is a vulnerable country. They needed the aid to fight Russia! People were at risk of dying. Zelensky was conflicted but ultimately decided that the aid was too important to lose, and he had an interview scheduled with Fahreed Zakaria. Two days before the interview was able to be completed, word leaked out about the aid being held up. Congress became angry, and the aid was released in early September.

And a little food for thought. Here's the original story about the aid being held up, before the whistleblower filed his report. Holding up the aid for any reason was enough to make us worried about the benefit to Russia of such a hold-up.

And interestingly enough, it has come to light that the aid was released earlier than the "president" said it was. He said that he himself released the aid on September 11, but it was actually released a few days earlier after lawyers determined that it was illegal to withhold the aid - for any reason, quid pro quo or not. This fact may be an extra nail in 45's coffin.

In the meantime, Benedict Donald's "defense" continues to inexplicably be, "READ THE TRANSCRIPT!" He has even outfitted the flunkeys at his rallies with T-shirts saying the same. Am I in another universe? We DID read the transcript and it DOES implicate you in a crime!

If he means the entire transcript, not just the summary that he provided, well, we'd love to read that, too, so hand it over!

Mike Luckovich

And if you still don't understand why the transcript is the strongest piece of evidence pointing to 45's guilt, watch this:

Attacks and calls to out the whistleblower continue. The whistleblower's attorney sent a cease and desist letter to Baby Fingers's lawyer saying, "I am writing out of deep concern that your client, the President of the United States, is engaging in rhetoric and activity that places my client, the Intelligence Community Whistleblower, and their family in physical danger.... I am writing to respectfully request that you counsel your client on the legal and ethical peril in which he is placing himself should anyone be physically harmed as a result of his, or his surrogates', behavior." BOOM!

This attack on the whistleblower is part of his – I'm still struggling to call it defense. What is it? His argument? His song-and-dance? His whitewash? His bullshit? The other part of it is pretty much head-in-the-sand defense. His lackeys in Congress won't read the testimony, and all he can do is proclaim the call "perfect" and use the tired "phony witch hunt" phrase ad nauseam. There has really been no defense at all. Witnesses from the SCROTUS camp have given overwhelming evidence – under oath in front of Congress – of the president's wrongdoing. Other witnesses have been obstructing the processes by not complying with subpoenas to appear. No one is clamoring to give exculpatory evidence. No one has been able to defend the actions one iota. It's pretty open-and-shut.

Devin Nunes – probably the man I dislike the most – has a list of potential witnesses that the GOP wants at the inquiry. The witnesses have to be approved by Chairman Schiff. One of the witnesses is Hunter Biden. Gah. Hunter Biden is irrelevant! The "dirt" that 45 wanted was to be manufactured. There is no evidence of wrong-doing from the Bidens. Nunes also wants to call the whistleblower. For the last time. The whistleblower's identity is protected by law. The individual's testimony has been corroborated by first-hand witnesses. Leave the person alone!

What's next? We move to the next phase. There are no more private hearings scheduled. SCROTUS says he will "probably" release the transcript of an earlier phone call to Zelensky on Tuesday. Public hearings begin on Wednesday. I've got my schedule clear that day. I can't miss this historic event!

Here are some helpful links from the Washington Post. Here is a full timeline of the Ukraine thing, from 2014 to now. And here is a calendar of the impeachment schedule. Handy!  And a neat summary from NPR.

And finally, a pitch. You may notice that I use a lot of links from the New York Times and the Washington Post. I subscribe, because a free press is vitally important to our Republic, and these two esteemed publications are hands-down the best source of political news out there. If you're frustrated by not being able to access all of my links, I encourage you to subscribe to one or both. WaPo has a special deal for Amazon Prime members, including one month free. NYT is only $1 a week with this link. And please please subscribe to your local newspaper! If you are in Santa Barbara, pick up the Independent each week, and read EdHat and Noozhawk online, and subscribe to the LA Times. I don't recommend the Santa Barbara News-Suppress!

Another tour through Impeachmentville

Another crazy few days in Impeachmentville. Join me for a tour.

THE TESTIMONY!

Transcripts of closed-door testimony were released Monday and Tuesday: those of Maria Yovanovitch and Michael McKinley on Monday, and those of Kurt Volker and Gordon Sondland on Tuesday.

One of the most disturbing aspects arising from the content of the transcripts is the smear campaign and frightening set of circumstances that Ambassador Yavonovich found herself in. She stated that she was told to "watch her back," and she told lawmakers that she felt threatened; that she was in fear for her safety by her own country. She still feels at risk for retaliation. Shocking and shameful.

Ambassador Yavonovich testified that when she sought help from one of the three amigos, E.U. Ambassador Gordon Sondland, he told her to tweet out something flattering of the president*. She summarized Sondland's advice: "You need to, you know, tweet out there that you support the president and that all these are lies and everything else." She didn't do it. And this 30-year veteran of the foreign service lost her job.

Michael McKinley, who was an aide to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, corroborated her account and was distressed at the treatment of her. He described it as "bullying tactics," saying it "had a very serious effect on morale."

Tuesday's release of Volker's testimony pretty much re-stated the facts as we know them. Volker's testimony went into the depths of Rudy Giuliani's involvement in the shadow diplomacy efforts with Ukraine. Volker testified that he himself texted a Ukrainian official a script for President Zelensky to use to publicly announce an investigation into Burisma, the firm that Hunter Biden worked for, and the conspiracy theory about the 2016 election interference. Volker corroborates most of the other facts, but downplays the illegalities – or his understanding of the illegalities – of all the shadowy dealings. But he's not in the position to decide the illegalities nor the degree of gravity of this blatant abuse of power. That's up to Congress.

Gordon Sondland, who remember is not a "never Trumper," but a pro-TЯUMP, bought-his-ambassadorship, no-experience official – decided to amend his testimony. It seems his memory was "refreshed;" possibly refreshed by the prospect of perjury charges after it was clear that testimony from Bill Taylor and Tim Morrison contradicted his own! Sondland's revision indicates that Ukraine was clear on the knowledge that there was a quid pro quo, having delivered himself that message about military aid being contingent on an announcement of investigation into the Bidens. This is pretty big stuff. It outlines the quiddiest of quid pro quos out of the mouth of a Trumper, not at all part of the Deep State. Not a "radical left Dem," or for that matter any kind of Dem. It's a guy who donated one million dollars to 45's inauguration. A guy who found his conscience, stood for country, and told the truth.

If you want to read the full transcripts, they are here:
Yavanovich
McKinley
Volker
Sondland (amendment at the end)

Someday maybe I'll get a chance to read them.

The depositions were at least nine hours each, and the transcripts are hundreds of pages long. If I were retired, or say, employed as a Member of Congress, I would read them, but I have a full life, so I depend on our free press to read and report on the content.

I would love to read the transcripts! And after clamoring for the closed-door committees to "let them in!" you'd think GOP members of Congress would want to read them, too, right? You'd be wrong.

Most bizarrely, SCROTUS tweeted that "Republicans should give their own transcripts." As if congressional stenographers are part of the Deep State. So weird. And so propaganda-y.

There were four no-shows to the impeachment inquiry hearings on Monday. To my mind, it doesn't matter for the evidence: the facts are pretty straight-forward and they aren't being contested. Defying subpoenas gives the impeachment committees reason to write up articles of impeachment for contempt and gives fuel to the idea that obstruction of justice may be considered consciousness of guilt.

Upcoming witnesses: A couple of biggies, whose participation is questionable: Mick Mulvaney, acting chief of staff, who has already admitted a quid pro quo on television, and former national security advisor John Bolton. Lev Parnas, one of the thugs that is close to Giuliani, agreed to cooperate with Congress. He has been indicted on campaign-finance violations.

And next week! Public hearings will be televised on Wednesday, November 13 and Friday, November 15. Guess who has two thumbs and is going to arrange her schedule accordingly? This girl! Tune in Wednesday for Bill Taylor, one of the most compelling witnesses. You'll remember him as a career public servant and Vietnam veteran, Master's degree from Harvard and BS from West Point. Taylor has served under Presidents Bush II and Obama.

THE WHISTLEBLOWER!

The Don continued to try to pressure for the publication of the whistleblower's name, and smarmy Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul has implored the press to publish the individual's name. Even Faux News has rejected that idea.

Paul has stated that he thinks he knows who it is and "probably will" out the individual himself. He's all mixed up about the Constiution, too (surprise). He asserts that it's 45's 6th Amendment right to face his accuser. Pssst... Rand... that's for criminal trials, not impeachment proceedings. 45's accusers will be we the people, represented by the House of Representatives, and we'd luuurve to have him face us. So, while you're on break this week, go back to Kentucky and study up!

It's immoral to identify the whistleblower, and it's dangerous to do so, too, which is probably why Paul and Agent Orange want to do it. They don't really want to hear from him. After all, his knowledge is not "first-class, or first-rate, or second-tier first-hand" information, remember? Besides, the identity of the whistleblower and the knowledge that he or she possesses is moot at this point. There are many witnesses to corroborate what the whistleblower described, not to mention the beautiful, perfect, tremendous evidence that 45 himself provided. They are after the chilling factor. Intimidation, threats, and terrorizing will be dangerously effective, and will chill other witnesses or whistleblowers, now or in the future. There are plenty of whack-jobs out there who would not think twice about committing violence in the name of their Supreme Leader. Luckily, senior Republicans disagree with them and say that the whistleblower's identity should remain secret.

THE PIVOT!

In the face of overwhelming evidence about the president's* abuse of power, Repugs are pivoting from "but there was no quid pro quo!" to "Ok there was quid pro quo and that's inappropriate but it's not impeachable!" Wanna bet? Just watch.

Tom Toles

To remind you, "impeachment" is not removal from office. The Senate may very well decide not to remove him from office, but they will have no choice if public opinion demands it. That's why the upcoming public hearings will be so important. Also important are your phone calls to your Members of Congress.

Strike that. Why don't you fax instead? Monday it was reported that the Republican National Committee funded efforts to jam Democratic representatives' phone lines. Aw, come on, really? Shaking my head. The depths of despair drives dumb deeds.

But that shall not impede public discourse. Use resist.bot to fax your members of Congress. It's super easy – do it from text or Messenger!

THE FIRES!

In the past few weeks, California has been decimated by multiple wildfires up and down the state. SCROTUS has threatened to withhold aid to California in their fight against wildfires. In a bizarre string of tweets on Sunday, he again asserted that somehow California is "pouring out water into the Pacific ocean" and should "clean the forest floors." WTF does that even mean?

We get it, you hate liberal California. You are a petty, vindictive man, who governs only the reddest of places (domestic and foreign, if ya know what I mean). Yeah, California is not worth the assistance to fight wildfire, but apparently, Russia is. Last summer, the Kremlin reported that TЯUMP offered assistance in fighting wildfires in Siberia.

What the hell does Russia have on their White House agent? Someday we'll know.

THE POLLS!

New opinion polls came out on Monday. Increasing numbers of Americans support impeachment, especially among independents. 45's approval ratings continue to slide while disapproval ratings increased, for a net underwater rating of negative 13.6. The Dems are looking good in races throughout the United States. Here is raw poll data from FiveThirtyEight. Here is an analysis about the Washington Post-ABC News poll.

Meanwhile, SCROTUS keeps making up polls that only live in his head, which he has done since day one. This time, he says he has "the real polls," but he still doesn't share them.

Dave Whamond

Voters went to the polls in a few states on Tuesday. There were big Democratic victories in Virginia and Kentucky! Virginia flipped the state house and senate, giving Democrats control of both bodies for the first time in almost 25 years. Kentucky elected a Democratic governor. <LSR peers at the horizon. Yep, a blue wave is a-comin'!>

And here is a fun victory. Remember the woman who was photographed flipping off the presidential motorcade? Juli Briskman won a seat on her Virginia county's Board of Supervisors, beating an eight-year Republican incumbent.

May more strong women put activism into action!

Darkness falls across the land; the midnight hour is close at hand

"Darkness falls across the land; the midnight hour is close at hand." – Michael Jackson, "Thriller."

Theo Moudakis

Halloween was a spooky day for the Monster-in-Chief. The House of Representatives voted to formalize the impeachment inquiry and set out the rules for the rest of the process. A historic day.

You can see the resolution here, a fact sheet here, and analysis of it here.

It's great that they are allowing 45-minute questioning periods for each side. The 5-minute back-and-forth of recent hearings, like for Kavanaugh, was so frustrating. Some lawmakers used their five minutes for grandstanding or self-promotion, and Kavanaugh was quite adept at doing mini-filibusters with every Democrat question ("I like beer!"). Forty-five minutes will allow good flow and proper questioning.

I love that Rep. Adam Schiff, Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, will be leading the initial public hearings. I have respected and admired him since the beginning of our Backwards Days. I wrote about him in this blog when James Comey came before Congress in March, 2017 to spill the T regarding the investigation into Russian interference and SCROTUS's role. I remember Schiff responding with strength to Devin Nunes's (R-CA) stunt in running to the Whitewash House with Russia evidence. I'm proud that Rep. Schiff is from California.

My Sister Resister, Anne, pointed out to me a misapplication in my last post when I said the resolution includes a capitulation to the GOP in its formalizing the inquiry. She's right; it's not at all a capitulation. The Resolution simply formalizes the investigation already started and sets forth the rules and the process from here on out.

The GOP's talking points that their Supreme Leader's rights are being trampled, that this inquiry in unconstitutional (have they even read the Constitution?!), or that he's being denied due process, are getting tiring. Erwin Chemerinsky, writing in the LA Times, agrees. But again, they can't defend the substance of the facts, so they screech about the process.

In fact, the same clown Devin Nunes compared the closed-door hearings as "cult-like." This comparison drew a sharp rebuke from Rep. Jackie Spier (D-CA), who nearly died at Jonestown when she accompanied Rep. Leon Ryan to the Peoples Temple site in 1978. She wrote pointedly in a tweet, "I know about cults. Cults are led by maniacal narcissists who expect complete adoration and relinquishment of independent thought. I suggest Mr. Nunes look elsewhere."

In reality, the rules seem to be fair to the Republicans. In fact, many of the rules were established during the Nixon and Clinton impeachment inquiries. Today's inquiry differs in that Congressional committees are doing the investigating, not special counsels as before. And remember: Despite the angry white men's storming the SCIF demanding to be let in, Repugs have had equal opportunity to participate in the closed door sessions, and they will have equal opportunity in the public hearings.

Some GOP committee members, however, have chosen not to participate. Say what now? Let's ask Rep. Ted Yoho (R-FL)

What the hell exactly are these buffoons doing up there on Capitol Hill?

I have a question for all of these dudes. You have a lot of power in our government. You are mentioned first in the U.S. Constitution. You have the power of the purse. Why are you willing to shut your eyes and relinquish that power to this man?

In other impeachment developments:

Charles Kupperman, deputy national security adviser, asked the court to decide if he is compelled to testify. He feels that he is in a Catch-22. He was subpoenaed to testify but the Whitewash House has forbidden him to comply, saying he is “absolutely immune” from congressional subpoenas. Now, it looks like both the House of Representatives and the Whitewash House want the judge to dismiss the case. He can either comply with the subpoena or refuse to testify and face the consequences of that decision.

Coming up next week are perhaps the last of the closed-door hearings. Congress is on a week-long recess, but the committees will be hard at work deposing a few more witnesses.

Monday: Mick Mulvany's aide Robert Blair is set to testify, along with NSC attorney John Eisenberg, who made the decision to hide the transcript of the phone call on an ultra-secure server, and Eisenberg's deputy, Michael Ellis. Hmmmm..... I had pegged Mr. Eisenberg for being the whistle-blower. He seems to have done some dirty deeds himself, though.

Tuesday will see a couple more witnesses, a White House Budget Office official, Michael Duffey, and an adviser to Secretary of State Pompeo, T. Ulrich Brechbuhl.

Thursday, if all goes well, we'll hear from former chief of staff John Bolton. He has been asked to testify, but has indicated he won't come voluntarily and must be subpoenaed. It's unclear if he will comply with a subpoena. I hope he does. He will be an interesting witness. He was angry about tying military aid to the Ukraine to a pledge for investigating the Bidens, and he was livid at Giuliani's shenanigans, calling Rudy a "hand grenade" and characterized his dealings with the Ukraine as "a drug deal." Mr. Bolton is a famously hawkish, a dyed-in-the-wool conservative, but like so many in 45's sphere, scooted out the revolving door. At the time, his ouster was blamed on his hawkish tendencies, that he left "because TЯUMP wouldn't let him start wars." But he left the day after the whistleblower complaint was filed and the day before 45 released military aid to Ukraine. Hmmmmmm.....

Yes, Bolton is a staunch conservative, but he is also an upstanding career public servant, serving in all the Republican administrations since Ronald Reagan. The Pollyanna that lives in my heart hopes that he will be a compelling witness, landing on the right side of history.

SCROTUS keeps screaming, "READ THE TRANSCRIPT!" but I don't think he's read the phone call summary (not a complete transcript) himself. All these witness are corroborating the substance of this excellent piece evidence he provided. He has asserted that he will perform the "transcript" in a televised "fireside chat." Wouldn't that be precious! "I vould like you to do us a favoя though."

Election news:

Beto dropped out of the race. We're down to 45,072 candidates. OK, actually, we're down to 17. It looks like there's just three or four with the momentum to really make a run: Biden and Warren are vying for top spot. Bernie is still viable but losing steam, and Mayor Pete is still hanging in.

Recently Nancy Pelosi spoke out about our choices in the Democratic field, and though she didn't name names, she offered this wisdom. She made the case for a more centrist candidate, with eyes on the big prize: beating TЯUMP in the electoral college. I've been having an internal debate. I'm becoming lefter every day, and I'd love to see Elizabeth Warren in the White House. But my esteem for Speaker Pelosi, and my respect for her political chops, has grown immensely this year. I begrudgingly think she's right. The progressive train will keep chuggin' even if we elect the less-than-the-most-left in 2020. Biden may be the one after all. I just wish he weren't so old. Maybe Mayor Pete will pull it off. My first pick for the ticket at this early stage? Warren/Buttigieg. Biden/Harris is a runner-up.

There are noises that Hillary might make a run in 2020. My voice joins the chorus of, "NOOOOOOO!!" I love ya, Hillary, but no. Just no.

Hillary caused controversy when she intimated that Rep Tulsi Gabbard is a Russian asset and is being groomed to be a third-party candidate. Tulsi got steamed. She hasn't dropped out of the race, but she also decided not to run for re-election for her Hawaii House seat. She may indeed be posing to be an alternate candidate. That might cause problems. I love ya, Tulsi, but nyet. Just nyet.

Other stuff:

In a bizarre tweet, SCROTUS put this out there:

When my Big Sister Resister Pagrs pointed me to it, I thought it was satire. I later learned that SCROTUS had tweeted it himself. Please, please, make this puke-ride stop!

The Cheeto-in-Chief has announced that he is changing his legal residency from New York to Florida, presumably for tax reasons. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo: "Good riddance."

Don the Con decided he may as well go for broke on corruption. He bribed Republican Senators and future jurors in his trial with cold, hard cash. You read that right. Talk about a quid pro quo. All the Senators in question affirmed their support of a Senate resolution calling the impeachment inquiry “unprecedented and undemocratic.” And then, SCROTUS offered these vulnerable Senators who are up for reelection some much-needed funds to fill their coffers.

Meanwhile, he owes more than a million dollars to cities and town across the U.S.A. who have hosted his campaign events. Such a scumbag.

The Ego-in-Chief was booed at a sporting event again. He attended a UFC match at Madison Square Garden yesterday. Once again, he was booed loudly as he entered the arena. Speak your truth, Americans.

And in the center ring, we have Rudy Giuliani! Watch the newly-appointed cybersecurity expert lock out his iPhone! Watch as he takes the device, with its potentially sensitive information and data, to the Genius bar at Apple Store San Francisco! Folks, have you ever seen such an idiot in all of your days?

And it was learned on Thursday that 45 has held up $105 million in Congress-approved funds to Lebanon. Who are the winners when there is a weaker Lebanese army? You guessed it! Russia and Iran! Let's hear it for Tяumpovich!

Public impeachment hearings (oh I love those words!) may start the week of November 11. Buckle up, Sister and Brother Resisters. Evidence is mounting. If all goes well, by next Halloween, we may see:

Thanks to Sister Resister Karenone!

The End of Silence

"I think of protest as confrontation and disruption, as the end of silence." – DeRay Mckesson

Tuesday was full o' newsy bits!

The World Series Boos: There was some blow-back from some folks about the 100dB booing against 45 at the World Series game Sunday. Let's watch again.

Some writers opined that it was not the right thing to do. Writers like Peter Wehner of The Atlantic. You know, "When they go low, we go high."

No. It's not only ok, it's right to boo this man. And not for any of the reasons his readers gave that Wehner mentions in his piece.

We do respect the presidency, and that's why this president was booed. "To announce that there must be no criticism of the president... is morally treasonable to the American public." – Theodore Roosevelt

Furthermore! We are booing this one man for many reasons. When he himself has disrespected the presidency as well as the United States of America, he especially does not deserve respect. Protesting is American. "I think of protest as confrontation and disruption, as the end of silence." – DeRay Mckesson

meme by my Big Sister Resister Pagrs!

The Military Raid: The Odious One made some stoooopid mistakes during his 48-minute-long ramble about the military raid to get ISIS leader al-Baghdadi. He accidentally or otherwise revealed many secrets about equipment and tactics that military and national security experts wish he hadn't blabbed about, including the likeness (but not the name) of "what I call a dog" who was wounded in the mission. Here's the good boy (or girl?)

And what the heck with the graphic descriptions, including repeated representations of al-Baghdadi's "whimpering and crying." Officials do not know where he got this information, as there was no audio in the feed, and the video of the dark tunnel was not discernible. But (surprise!) it may not at all be true. SCROTUS considers crying to be an unforgivable weakness, so describing al-Baghdadi this way is the greatest insult that 45 can muster for the monstrous terrorist. It's also classic projection. ;-)

As always, Stephen Colbert masterfully treats this news in his monologue:

And please watch this mash-up of Obama and TЯUMP done by Jimmy Kimmel Live!

The Impeachment: Impeachment news breaks fast in our country these days, but LSR is working hard to keep up!

Alexander Vindman testified to the impeachment inquiry committees yesterday. You can read his opening statement here. The trail of evidence is winding around closer and closer to the center.

Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman is a highly decorated 20-year Army man, wounded in Iraq by an IED. He was awarded the purple heart. He has a Master's degree from Harvard. He is an expert on the Ukraine and has served in the Whitewash House in the National Security Council.

He is also an immigrant. He and his family immigrated from the Soviet Union when he was 3 years old. A classic American story, his father, his twin brother and he were seeking a better life when they fled the Soviet Ukraine in 1979. His father worked hard to provide, and the brothers not only thrived, they excelled. Lt. Col Vindman's twin brother is also a highly decorated Army veteran.

And Vindman was listening in on the fateful July 25 telephone call between 45 and Ukraine President Zelensky.

Another impeccable witness.

Which means the sycophants over at FAUX News have to stoop to their pit of slimy, stinky poo-mud to find something to throw. And they did.

Always-drunk-sounding Laura Ingraham got John Yoo to climb out of the slime hole and together they engaged in a shameful smear campaign.

I don't have to tell you, my readers, this (and this is a minor point), but Ms. Ingraham and Mr. Yoo may not understand that UKRAINE IS AN ALLY. Assisting Ukraine is American policy! How is it even possible to engage in espionage with someone the United States government is trying to assist!? To the bigger point, this man is an American patriot. He has devoted much of his life to the service of the United States, including taking shrapnel from an IED. He did his duty to report his concerns at the time, and he is doing his duty now to come before Congress to tell the story.

Laura and John, you are ugly, ugly, disgusting people.

It was reported that Lt. Col. Vindman confirmed what we suspected: the summary of the phone call that SCROTUS released was missing some of the conversation. He will no doubt be one of the star witnesses of the public hearings to come.

....which we learned about yesterday, when Speaker Pelosi announced that the House will vote on an impeachment resolution tomorrow. Part of the resolution will be a capitulation to GOP demands that a full vote be taken authorizing the inquiry itself, but it will also outline the process to come, including the public portion of the impeachment inquiry. I. Can. Not. Wait.

It's possible that Ambassador Sondland perjured himself during this testimony, as Lt. Col. Vindman gave contradictory testimony.

Upcoming witnesses:According to the Washington Post, "Robert Blair, a senior adviser to acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney; two officials with experience at the Energy Department, Brian McCormack and Wells Griffith; and two State Department officials familiar with Ukraine policy, Catherine Croft and Chris Anderson, according to three people familiar with the proceedings."

I would like to hear from John Bolton and Rudy Giuliani.

Have you called your Members of Congress today? #Resist!

A liar who will deceive with his tongue will not hesitate to do the same with his pen...

"Do not consider it proof just because it is written in books, for a liar who will deceive with his tongue will not hesitate to do the same with his pen." – Maimonides
                             ....Or his photograph.

Sunday it was reported that mega bad guy, ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, was killed (he reportedly blew up himself and some children after being chased down a dead-end tunnel) in a U.S. military raid on Saturday. It was a risky operation, made riskier by 45's earlier capricious decision to pull troops out of Syria. All the meticulous planning – which the president* was aware of – had to be speeded up before troops and equipment were lost to the retreat. What a dumb-ass.

According to Wikipedia, this isn't the first time his death has been reported. In fact, al-Baghdadi apparently has had more lives than a cat. Reportedly, soldiers were able to gather DNA from the scene and confirm the identity within a couple hours. Amazing.

And then, this photo was released.

My first impression was "yeah, right." And then it was adding a thought bubble to the TV-Addict-in-Chief: "I wonder when 'Hogan's Heroes' is on." Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Army General Mark Milley on the right is pleading with us with his eyes. "Get. Me. Out. Of. Here."

I'm not the only one to be skeptical of this photo. Pete Souza, official Obama photographer, jumped on it. See his tweet:

It doesn't take a genius photographer to know that this was staged. Where the hell are they all looking? And why aren't their machines plugged in?

Compare this picture to Souza's iconic photo of President Obama during the raid and killing of Osama bin Laden.

Even 45's propaganda is amateur.

Anyway, I guess the death of al-Baghdadi good for the War On Terror, but the loss of the leader is just that....the loss of the leader. ISIS isn't going away. Especially after TЯUMP let them out of the Kurdish prison with his stupid decision to withdraw from northern Syria.

If you don't quite understand the full situation in Syria, you're not alone. It's a hugely complex situation, as is all of the Middle East. This is worth the watch. John Oliver, in his no-nonsense and frequently funny style, explains it. And you get to laugh, too.

How does the death of al-Baghdadi affect the impeachment inquiry? It doesn't.

Other events of the last few days, impeachment and otherwise:

Rep. Elijiah Cummings was laid to rest on Friday. Such a loss of a fine statesman, dedicated to the country literally until his dying day. Within hours before his death, he signed subpoenas for the impeachment inquiry. May he rest in power.

Congress gets to see grand jury information presented during the Mueller investigation, according to a court ruling. The ruling also deemed the impeachment inquiry legal to proceed without a formal vote, which we already knew it was. Judge Beryl A. Howell of the Federal District Court in Washington indicates that 45's obstructive tactic actually worked against him. She wrote, “The White House’s stated policy of noncooperation with the impeachment inquiry weighs heavily in favor of disclosure. Congress’s need to access grand jury material relevant to potential impeachable conduct by a president is heightened when the executive branch willfully obstructs channels for accessing other relevant evidence.”

Good judges make good checks and balances.

There was fall-out from the storming the SCIF by idiot Repug lawmakers. There are calls for investigation and censure, as the Congressmen violated the law by bringing – and using – cell phones within the secure facility. Here's a good Q and A explanation of the SCIF situation from the New York University School of Law.

Kelly Anne Conway was her usual charming self last week. This time, she railed against a Washington Examiner reporter. See some of her 7-minute rant here.

"Don't pull the crap where you're trying to undercut another, a woman based on who she is married to." Hillary much, Kelly Anne? Later, Mrs. Conway took offense to the suggestion that she threatened the reporter, saying, "If I threaten someone, you'll know it." Straight out of the script of an abuser.

Late one night, another clown in the circus butt-dialed a reporter from NBC and left a nice long 3-minute voicemail. And Rudy Giuliani's conversation mistakenly recorded wasn't some idiotic thing like plans for lunch. Rudy was heard discussing going to Bahrain and for needing "several hundred thousand dollars." It's not the first time he butt-dialed this reporter. The first time the accidental voicemail centered around dishing on -- you guessed it -- Hunter Biden. Read about – and listen to – the goings on in the Center ring here at NBC.com. Seriously, you can't make this stuff up!

Former Chief of Staff John Kelly said in an interview over the weekend that he had warned his boss about impeachment. “I said, whatever you do — and we were still in the process of trying to find someone to take my place — I said whatever you do, don’t hire a ‘yes man,’ someone who won’t tell you the truth — don’t do that. Because if you do, I believe you will be impeached,” Kelly said. Clearly, as he has done throughout the last three years, he ignored good advice.

Yesterday, SCROTUS attended a World Series game at Nationals Park. When he was announced, the cheers surrounding game time turned to boos, and then to chants of "Lock him up!" Poor Trumpty Drumpfty got hims feelings hurt (videos in link - you'll want to see his face). It's probably the first time that he's been in front of a crowd that wasn't filled with his sycophantic base. Poor baby.

Upcoming impeachment inquiry testimony:

From the New York Times's impeachment briefing:
There will be weekend testimony: Investigators are scheduled to talk tomorrow (Saturday) to Philip Reeker, the acting assistant secretary of state for Europe and Eurasia.
Charles Kupperman, who served until last month as deputy national security adviser at the White House, is scheduled to sit for questioning on Monday. Mr. Kupperman worked closely with Mr. Bolton.
And Timothy Morrison, the senior director for Europe and Russia on the National Security Council and a Bolton loyalist, is scheduled to appear next Thursday. He would be the first current White House official to speak with investigators.

Regarding Charles Kupperman: he has asked a federal judge to rule on the admissibility of his testifying. Congress has issued a subpoena but his boss at the State Department has forbidden anyone from cooperating. He is asking the court for direction. EXACTLY the reason why our founding fathers created three co-equal branches of government. Let's hope the courts rule the right way.

As always, thanks for reading! I'll be back with more!

Looking forward: Democrats, get it together!

Hello, Readers!

I just want to make you aware of an excellent editorial series from the Los Angeles Times. It's in seven parts; none of the pieces is very long, and I hope you'll read them. It's great food for thought. We (ha! I'm not a Democrat, but I'm with you, Lefties!) need to get it together in order to defeat the Orange Scourge. Please read it, and think about who you will support and how we'll make this happen in 12 short months from now.

Part 1. Undoing the great mistake from 2016

Part 2. Trump’s presidency is a train wreck. Let us count the ways

Part 3. Sorry, ‘electability’ matters

Part 4. Moderate and progressive Democrats have to unite to win back the White House in 2020

Part 5. Democrats need to talk honestly about race. But can they?

Part 6. Cleaning up Trump’s mess

Part 7. How old is too old to be president?

Resist and VOTE!

The Republikarens and other stories

The fun never ends!

It's turning out to be another blockbuster week in our history.

The biggest story was former Ambassador to the Ukraine Bill Taylor's testimony to the Congressional committees on Tuesday. His opening statement reads like a "Mission: Impossible" script. You must read it. Here ya go.

Reports are that there was rapt silence with in the congressional chambers, with an occasional gasp, during his statement.

A couple of my takeaways:

What we had suspected, was confirmed. There were two separate teams working the Ukraine mission: What Taylor called the "regular channel," which he lead after Maria Yavanovich's ouster; and the "irregular channel," manned by Giuliani and his amigos, Kurt Volker, Ambassador Sondland, and Secretary of Energy Rick Perry. Taylor's outline of the second team, directed by the president* to enact some coercion of Ukraine into performing political errands, is damning. This opening statement alone, disregarding his more than nine hours of testimony, is enough evidence to convict 45 and a few of his buddies.
  • He confirmed the explicit quid pro quo, saying that "everything" (a Whitewash House meeting and the $400 million in military aid) was dependent on a public announcement from Zelensky about investigations into the Bidens.
  • He described the strong-arm tactics of The Don, saying:
Before these text messages, during our call on September 8, Ambassador Sondland tried to explain to me that President Trump is a businessman. When a businessman is about to sign a check to someone who owes him something, he said, the businessman asks that person to pay up before signing the check. Ambassador Volker used the same terms several days later while we were together at the Yalta European Strategy Conference.
  • He painted a picture of the fragility of Ukraine, in Russia's shadow, deeply wanting to be free of corruption and become an upstanding European country as well as a U.S. ally. Through his words, you can feel the vulnerability of Ukraine. How could the country resist demands made by the most powerful leader in the world?

Bill Taylor is the epitome of American Patriot. Educated at West Point and a Vietnam veteran, he has been a public servant for over 50 years. He was on the ground during the 1990s after the Soviet Union collapsed, ready to help pick up Ukraine. As you read his statement, you know this is personal for him. He has a deep respect for Ukraine, as well as deep respect for the United States of America. I had never heard his name before now, but I have deep respect for him. And he's an impeccable witness.

On Monday, Fuckface von Clownstick invited the press into his worm hole cabinet meeting and spouted for 71 minutes. Seventy-one minutes: it was a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Skip the press conference and let Stephen Colbert tell ya all about it.

On Wednesday an angry white mob stormed the castle. In a grotesque stunt, a couple dozen GOP congressmen stormed into the Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility (SCIF), the ultra-secure area in the basement of Capitol Hill where closed-door testimony is being held. They thought this was a good way to protest the closed-door nature of the testimony and impede the proceedings. But it just made them look like immature idiots. In fact, 12 of the members who RSVP'd to the storming were actually part of the committees and are invited to hear the depositions. They succeeded in holding up the testimony of Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Laura Cooper for five hours. They used cell phones and shared audio in this highly secure, classified area, a possible felony. They had Domino's pizza delivered. The Sergeant-at-Arms showed up. Sigh.

You may remember last week when Rep. Matt Goetz, angriest of the angry white men, showed up to the chamber and demanded to be let in. The headlines made it look like he was disallowed simply for being Republican. The truth is, he isn't on one of the investigating committees, plain and simple. This week, it was Matty boy who lit the torches for his brethren and led them to the basement on Wednesday.

OK, I'll say it real slow for those of you Members of Congress in the back who don't quite understand.
  • The depositions are behind closed doors to protect the integrity of each witness.
  • It's not secret. Initial testimony is behind closed doors (as was done during the Nixon and Clinton impeachment inquiries), but public testimony will be presented in time (as was done during the Nixon and Clinton impeachment inquiries). Transcripts of these depositions will be made public eventually.
  • There are no rules about the process that the House must take. None in the Constitution, none in House rules.
  • It isn't a Democrat show. There are a total of 47 Republican representatives taking equal part in the closed-door inquiries. They are able to question and cross-examine each witness.
  • Matt, you are not a part of any of the committees that are participating in the inquiry. For the last time, sit back in your seat and keep your hands to yourself. And turn over your pitchfork right now.
  • Your obstruction is showing. You can't defend the corrupt actions of your supreme leader, so you attack the process.
  • Now everyone, go back and start legislating or you'll all get detention.

A couple other tidbits from the week.

45 threw a fit and cancelled his subscriptions to The New York Times and the Washington Post. And more: Trump Cancels White House Subscription To ‘Highlights’ Over Anti-Goofus Bias (from The Onion).

The Racist-in-Chief called the impeachment inquiry a "lynching" in a Tuesday tweet.

There was backlash, understandably. The term was not used in error. Twitterers responded.

Senator Lindsey Graham, who has in the past has sometimes sounded reasonable, mostly now screeches as SCROTUS's mouthpiece. Today he introduced a resolution to condemn the House's inquiry. Sen. Graham, you are not party to the impeachment process. Go join Rep. Goetz on the Think Bench out in the hall, please.

The Moron-in-Chief said that he's going to build a wall in Colorado. Cuz, you know, New Mexico.

And some positives from the Resistance:

Watch Mitt Romney, the one GOP lawmaker who is not afraid to speak out against TЯUMP. He may be positioning for something.....

This week's testimony from Bill Taylor revealed an angry John Bolton, who was fired as national security advisor just around the time the $400 million in aid was being dangled. Is he poised to be a thorn in 45's side? Do we get to welcome this famously hawkish conservative, who has served in three GOP administrations, to the resistance? The plot thickens.

Our dear Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg has been awarded the $1 million Berggruen Prize for Culture and Philosophy, given annually to a “thinker whose ideas are shaping human self-understanding to advance humankind.” She, of course, is donating the prize money to charity. Ahhh, we love our Notorious RBG!

Thanks for reading! Keep up the Resistance!
